Secord Reflections on the My School Review Process
What was it like to have these conversations?
• Very useful and with a sort of excitement about casting forward to where we want to go
• Nice to hear about all
• Good, if people are going to see them through
• Good way to allow our community member to share what their visions are; ie. parents, agencies, students, in-school partnerships
• Reaffirmed and reviewed the many services and partnerships we have in place at Secord
• Stimulated good ideas – now need to keep up to ensure implementation happens
• Started the dialogue about what our school could be to the community
• Good to voice opinions and be heard and be able to pass onto a higher level
• Very refreshing and empowering to have a voice
What has been surprising about this process?
• Low number of participants
• Turnout
• Things that emerged ie. nutrition
• Our services are very well aligned to community concerns and priorities
• The volume and variety of topics raised
• We had good turnout
• Went quickly and smoothly
• Discovering that we can make a change for the future
Have you had the opportunity to have these discussions in your community
before?
• Yes, but not in a formal setting or on an organized base
• Yes
• No
• Minimum – through school council
• New to this school – has helped define direction of school council
• No
• Yes
• Yes on a smaller level – it’s nice to have the school board and school
involved
• No – my child is in daycare (at the school) and I feel a bit “isolated”
from the day to day workings of the school
What have been the benefits of participating in this process?
• Pizza
• Community Turnout
• Hoping to see the ideas put in place within a year or two
• Prepared a vision for the future, where we are going. Help to unite
community with logistics about “our school journey”. Will funding be
provided to help support these ideas?
• Bringing our support agencies together in a visible way
• Meeting other parents, resources in the community
• Know a lot more of what’s happening – let’s continue
• Hearing different views about what the community wants in it’s school
over the next 5-10 years
• Feeling empowered
